Snorkeling Tips for Beginners

Snorkeling is different and more relaxed than SCUBA. Snorkeling allows you to swim on the surface of the water, experience brightly colored fish, find beautiful corals, and maybe swim with turtles, dolphins, and seals.

Of course, SCUBA has all of this (and more, actually) but snorkeling is cooler. There is no certification program. You don't need to carry heavy equipment. And, you can snorkel on almost all tropical beaches that you meet.

Cozumel snorkeling is better than others but you will learn them along the way. For now, here are some great tips for new beginner snorkelers.

Tips for Beginner Snorkel Fans

Know Your Ocean, Your Equipment, and Yourself

Never underestimate the ocean, even if you are an experienced swimmer. Get to know your snorkeling equipment and its limits. However, most importantly, make sure you understand your limitations.

If you are just starting out snorkeling instead of trying your equipment, make sure it fits, and then spend as much time as you need in the shallow and calm waters. You will practice your snorkeling skills, familiarize yourself with your equipment, and know your limitations.

Many of the most experienced snorkelers still do this as soon as they arrive at their snorkeling location no matter how many times they've been there before.

When you touch the reef you really kill it. It just touches it! Imagine the damage you do if you really stand up, sit or break pieces of coral and stones for "souvenirs". Marine ecosystems are a complicated fabric of many complicated things. Don't bother if you want it to last.
